Any Super Sonic love out there?

Post by Molly »

Bought this today. Don't see that many of them compared to some Fender amps. Any thoughts, hints or tips relating to these? Cheers.

Treat it like a non-MV amp. Don't bother trying to get preamp gain. They can also be pretty strident. What speaker does it have?

I don't like the pre-amp gain either, almost harsh sounding at home but probably good in a band.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

I found them 'hissy' at low volume but that won't be a concern for you I imagine

Talk to Oleg; he knows how to work them.

Short answer:
Do the ambient chords on green, the powerchord on yellow, the solo on red.

Longer answer

In two of its 3 modes it does not have a master volume. On the first channel it behaves like a deluxe or a bassman, depending on which option you select. I find I need to tame the top end a bit for the deluxe, and boost it for the bassman. And the opposite for the bass.

On the burn channel, it behaves like a Boogie overdrive channel from a mk-2(?) with two separately adjustable gain stages. I find the best Texas tone is when I keep the first one low and boost the second. But yeah, you need to push some volume for this channel to sing, as you would probably expect. It will sing happily if you drive it. Loves a Klon. And a Timmy.

Is it a 22w (6v6) or a 60w (6l6)?

I like mine, it is versatile and I like having an FX loop on an amp with a Deluxe-like tone, as I use a lot of delay.

Hope you enjoy it.

Bit of a sleeper amp but I hear they are noisy (hiss/hum)?

Thanks Oleg. Thanks guys.

It's 6v6 with a 'Fender Special' speaker. Played it for an hour or so this evening in the lounge with a couple of Strats. Really enjoyed it.

Will try the suggestions and report back. Cheers.

In my world, anything Oleg likes is invariably excellent. But I gave up on the Supersonic. I know it can sound good but I didn't find it at all intuitive.

No worries, hope it works out. It is kind of a mashup of three of my favourite amps:

Black face dlx
Bassman
Boogie mk2

It gets close to all three, which is good enough for most gigs and practice sessions, for me at least.

I’ve had a couple (also a big 60w head) and noise / hum has never been an issue.

This is exactly why I was so excited to get my hands on one. Next time, I'll get an instructor as well.

Nice acquisition. FWIW I think they look the best in the blonde tolex
