Nitro spraying advice

If I have say 3 coats going down, in say 15 min cycles, I won't clean between...but I might mix a little thinner.

After the last coat of the day I always clean. Wipe the bowl and run through around 30mls or more thinner,

So you use the thinner for cleaning?

Shoot some thinner through at the end, clean your bowl, strip your nozzle and store in thinners - if you're spraying again next day. Else dry after cleaning everything, reassemble and put in a sealed plastic bag, keep the dust away.

Yes. Acetone.

Ok buying some supplies this week. How much nitro do I need for a guitar? Solid colour and gloss on top, already have sealer/primer.

Get a litre of clear and 500mls of the colour, as a starter.

Most shops though will probably only do 1lt. I purchase clear in the 4lt tins. Get about 10-15 guitars I reckon.

So many questions....

- Are you wanting a yellowed look, like an aged clear, on top of the colour? Or, super clear so there's near zero tint to the clear (always going to be a little).
- What sealer/primer are you using? Is it nitro compatible?
- what's the wood? Will it bleed oil (like mahogany can)?

Always good to have a bit of shellac around for the latter.

1) I'm wanting a clear finish, as little yellowing as possible.
2) Sanding-sealer is also nitrocellulose based so should be sweet. Primer I'm using solid white nitro.
3) Pretty sure this body is totara. But other Grant might be able to confirm. Not sure what Ant's guitar is made from.

Yep totara body with rimu top. So you redoing the colour top? I started off using a preval sprayer at first - same thing with a pile of orange peel. Getting a spray gun helped a lot - still some orange peel, but less. Flat sanding towards the end of the spraying process helps as well.

On a serious note, modern fender nitro finishes are over a poly primer…
