Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Pete Thorn is out doing a VH tribute show. Tone and playing seems spot-on, as you would expect.

Singer seems loathsome, mind.

Just watched Hot for Teacher, well played but just missing that bit of EVH timing magic that makes playing his stuff easy, but sounding like him hard.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

He was Van Halen's singer for a quick minute between Hagar and Cherone.

Didn't know about him or Cherone. None of this stuff reaches Methven.

Mitch just did a few rehearsals, there's only a couple of recordings.

Cherone recorded a whole album, I think the only time Van Halen toured NZ was with Cherone on the promo tour?

I saw Extreme at Donnington. As they emerged the sky went dark as the bottles of piss came flying in... They started by saying that they knew some folk had questioned their place on the bill, then played their arses off. Did a great version of Seven Seas of Rhye. I don't think the crowd warmed to them though. I saw them again in Liverpool. Nuno had a brace on his leg for some reason. Fucking amazing guitar player but I think I still left early to make sure I got the train.

Dude, you should have said hello!

Gary Cherone got pretty pissed off at one point because the whole crowd were involved in that piss bottle war and were paying very little attention to the band.

LOL. I remember. Can't recall who headlined. Metallica maybe.

Was that the year with the Metal Hammer stage? Saw Cry of Love with Audley Freed.

Pete Thorn does a good job. Very close to bang on. Mitch M is very very good too.

But EVH just has a different feel. Check out live at Donnington 1985. They play it so fast. EVH is slightly ahead of the beat. Probably hopped up on something but there's that swing.

Also, Jason Becker - there's an audio demo of Hot For Teacher on YT from when he was rehearsing to go on tour with Roth. Amazing attention to detail and timing - exquisite vibrato, total control over the dynamics - that IMO put him in a technical league above everyone. I don't think you'd be wasting your timing checking it out.

Awesome! Great swing and style without sounding like an Eddie clone. He has some cool riffs on the A Little Ain't Enough album. Monster player :(

Jason Becker was such a beast, the doco about him and getting ALS is well worth a watch.

Aerosmith that year, Extreme's main problem was they followed Pantera and Sepultura, so was a heavy crowd.

Cry of Love were awesome!
