Well due to L4 lockdown I have the chance to A/B two fine Fender heads. I have a Super Bassman 300 and a good friend has kindly loaned me his Fender Bassman 500.
Both share the same tube preamp section with two 12AX7s
Power amp with the Super Bassman 300 has one 12AX7, one 12AT7 and six 6550s in the power section. It weighs just under 30 kgs
The Bassman 500 has a lightweight Class D Power Amp and weighs just under 8 kgs

Awesome sound from both, but there is a bit more "weight" behind the sound of the tube head. Loving the opportunity of playing them both :-)

Big old Ashdown CTM-300

Valve Amps are definitely a thing.

Whats the fretless in your picture Dave? Not a SD Curlee? Ibanez?

1981 Ibanez Roadster. A magic bass that one. Love your Ashdown rig there 🙂

2004 last changed the Chromes on my 76 Precision

2007 for the fretless 89 Jazz

I can't remember when I got my Tobias but put halfwounds on the day i got it and their still on.

Last restring I had to ask Mrs Foal to help😂😂😂 it was killing my hands
I’ve been meaning to ask you - what’s in the stable at the moment?
Fender Jazz fretted 71 and fretless 89
Fender Precision 76 - lovely bass
Tobias Growler
L2 Steinberger - doesn't get played enough
MTD Grendel 5 - amazing instrument for sfa Czech
EBMM Stingray fretless- Chromes on way smooth

I can't sell anything, I really am hopeless. Trying to offload Comics presently, even that seemingly simple task is burdensome

I sed Neville has an Aguilar DI pedal for cheap. Do you still have yours?
I thought you’d moved that Growler on for some reason.
Good to see you have the 70’s Jazz and P still!

Have a Stingray Special 5, Lakland Skyline DJ4 in lake placid blue off of Nev, and later this year aiming to get a Purple Lakland Skyline 44-64 GZR in purple (PJ)

I’ve bought and sold so many Tonehammers that now even though I have an HX Stomp that I’ve tweaked to be perfect for me, I still keep it on the board next to it. Good price for the Tonehammer too.

Wish I had the gold for Daniel’s Ray too - absolute steal at that price

Also loving the fact you’re literally not allowed to move the 300 anywhere at the moment I bet!

Fond memories of an old cream all-tube Fender Bassman amp & matching 4x12 “inverted pyramid” cab they had at Musical Sounds in Greenlane when I was a uni student in the 90’s. I think it might have been a 100, but TBH I’m not sure. Wonderful buttery warm sound, especially with a fretless. Unfortunately Imhad neither the money nor appropriate transport to acquire it.

Haha it's very nice to have the luxury of not having to move it. Not sure the neighbours would agree though
The vintage channel on each head has that warm sound for sure, but the other channel has a few more EQ & overdrive options. Love the weight of the 500 though, it was a shock to find out how light it is :-)

An Aebersold Show Tunes book, John Goldsby's Jazz Book and some notation sheets and I'm cruising.

Missing my bass already. Too big for my suitcase, even stripped down. So have brought a Tele with me. Time to get in touch with the dark side again.

Will have a look around local pawn shops, see if I can find something cheap.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

So a guy with 3 Steinbergers told me you can use normal strings. How I don't know

If it's true that really would of been handy to know 30 years ago when I bought it.

I think you need an adapter though. They did them with a locking allen screw thing at the top end, or at least the knock off ones did.

Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
