I sidelined a 3k Splawn for a $500 Katana, so yep!

Re: Would you happily play a really cheap guitar?
Definitely on PRS SE stuff. 4-5 years ago you could get them on TM for under $500 and they were incredibly good value. I picked up a Tremonti SE for $350 from a Cashies and then later a Tim Mahoney model for around the same price off TM within the same year. People seemed to have cottoned on to the fact they're in demand and it's rare to see one go for less than about 6-800 ... there was a time when TM was flooded with Santanas for stupid cheap prices - old bandmate picked up one for $200... now they're back up around $700.

Played some great shows when I was younger with a 90s Samick SG copy and later a Squier tele. It's doable at that standard of cheapness.

Epiphone have a Maestro equipped SG, with burstbuckers, '61' styling (small guard, cherry red etc) and a nitro finish (according to their blurb) for $549 USD.
That's a lot of guitar for very little money.
I don't know if they're available in NZ but if they were, that's well under 1k, they look cool AF and probably don't need any modding.

But compare other products that cost $549 in the States to the NZ RRP. I suspect close to $1500kdawg2a wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:10 am Epiphone have a Maestro equipped SG, with burstbuckers, '61' styling (small guard, cherry red etc) and a nitro finish (according to their blurb) for $549 USD.

Possibly, but one thing I've learnt in the last 9 months of living here is the US isn't a value for money destination anymore. Our groceries and utilities are (with the exchange rate) the same as NZ.robthemac wrote: ↑Thu Jul 22, 2021 9:12 amBut compare other products that cost $549 in the States to the NZ RRP. Re: Would you happily play a really cheap guitar?
If we're talking about actual cheap guitars I've had a couple of SX strats that were under $100 2nd hand. If I was gigging them I'd probably spent a little bit on a pickup upgrade and maybe some nicer tuners but after a DIY setup they're very usable.

I consider my AC10 a cheap amp, and it’s bloody brilliant if that’s your sound.

RS have them in stock in 5 stores. $1099
x2 USD gets you there most of the time when comparing prices.

Re: Would you happily play a really cheap guitar?
If we're talking generally going low brow - I have sidelined my whole pedal board for a Boss GT-1 (with Fs-6 switch) followed by an MXR 10 band eq, into an AC15.
Don't think I've ever been happier with my sound.
The MXR eq is always on to fix a few things i don't like about the basic AC15 sound, and the GT-1 covers everything else. Of course the GT-1 has eq's in it, but I wanted the separate eq at my fingertips to correct global things on the fly.
I found almost all of the GT-1 presets to be awful, but with editing i have enough patches I'm happy with (about 10 sounds). And I haven't really spent much time exploring the GT-1.

They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.
