Buying an amp from overseas-- query re: customs

Post by mugamee »

Im looking to buy an amp from overseas that costs more than 1k. I am pretty sure and I am happy to pay whatever nz customs will charge.

The question is, do I wait for them to hold my item and give me notice that I need to pay? Or should I notify them in advance?

Looking for directions from those who have done so in the past. Thanks Team!

Make sure it's 240v. Sorry if that's too obvious.

If you can get hold of the AWB details that customs use then you can speed the process up.
The biggest delay is them sending you a letter with the customs charges then you actioning it, then them processing the payment etc. If you have the shipping details, you can contact customs, get the invoice emailed, pay straight away and have it released straight away. You can even go to the airport and pick up from their depot instead of waiting for the usual local delivery routine.

1. You will have to register with IRD for an importer customer client code. Fill in a form, email it to them, takes up to a week or so to process.

2. They will notify you. Don't email them in advance. Best way is to follow tracking, it will show an update when the item is being held for assessment, then a link to pay the GST and charges.
