Sorted - "Balanced" speaker for 1x12 combo amp? Closed back
I've been on a roll to sort out the speakers in my amps and cabs. This would be the last one to sort for now.
I say balanced rather than neutral as that seems to hint towards frfr these days.
The chch people may recall the randall combo amp I had at a gearfest. As I can swap the preamp in it, I would like a speaker that is a jack of all trades. The greenback in there is fine but can't help but wonder.
So far a mesa C90 is looking like the best candidate. The virtual cabs I've tried are really impressive. Failing that, maybe a classic lead 80.
Any others that I should consider?
I have 16 ohm V30 to swap if you're holding... and no I haven't tried it yet in the combo.

I just sold two CL80s. Only got a 50w A Type left.

Bugger! Always the way. The A-type does read like it would fit the bill. Might get back to you on that one Brian. Thanks.

Green backs have a bit of signature woody mid tone so I’d say you could do better with something else. Especially if you are wanting to go from a blackface module to a diesel VH4 in the same amp.
Haven’t personally tried the A type Molly is selling but I have listen to a lot of demos (as I’m considering them for my Proreverb) and they sound fairly balanced. Not nearly as mid focused as a V30.
The C90 is probably a good bet too, or an EV12 or something that is loud and clean and lets the preamp voice come through as apposed to any speaker breakup or character.

I think the evm12l is going a bit far in terms or power handling. The amp is only 20w. I still want the speaker to do speaker stuff. Not necessarily just having the preamp sound.
Also the C90 virtual cab sounded much more musical than the evm one.

Hell I just chuck JBL E120s into everything.
He hit a chord that rocked the spinet and disappeared into the infinite ...

I'm pretty sure that Mesa used to use the EVM in their Thiele cabs and then replaced it with the cheaper C90, as well as saving you some cash it won't weigh the same as a small car eitherMattallica wrote:I think the evm12l is going a bit far in terms or power handling. Mesa C90 is a GREAT choice for a "jack of all trades" speaker. Highly recommendable. You can often pick them up pretty cheap on the used market.
Also FYI, the C90 and the Classic Lead 80 are essentially the same spec speaker, though the C90 adds a vent through the magnet to achieve a slightly higher power rating. Also, the C90 is still made in the UK, if that is what blows your skirt up.

Thanks Matt. Yeah I think I'll hold out for a C90. Made in uk is nice but it's more Mesa being adamant that it's the one to have...

Bump before buying. Any 8 ohm options out there? Have a 16 ohm V30 for swaps
