Strat build - 2020 build

Post by SimpleSi »

So I had a chunk of Alder that I recovered from my Ex-wifes place - where I kept it for storage.

I also had a random strip of Mahogany left over from a pedalboard I built a few years back that I've been using as a straight edge for a while.

It's current state is "needs painting and setting up"

Body:
Alder / Mahogany / Alder / Mahogany / Alder

Neck:
Blackwood
Puriri board

Bareknuckle Mothers Milk set
Obsidian Wire 7-way kit
Super-vee Strat Trem
Fender locking tuners
Fender fretwire

Paint will be colour-changing automotive paint - Purple to green to blue.

Pictures that I've been posting to instagram below:

I'm on the fence - the mahogany chipped out quite a bit during planing.. so I'm using grain fill - and it looks poop

Love that neck! I 'milled' some puriri a few years ago and should put it to use.
Did you varnish or stain the fretboard?
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Boiled linseed when it had no frets.

It's gone satin since. Just the board is puriri, it stinks when you saw it..

Neck itself is blackwood, has a really cool black line in it, hence the blackwood I guess.. it's a great quarter sawn piece.

Tru-Oil on the neck itself, only 4 coats.

Once I'm ready to set it up after painting the body, I'll steel wool the back of the neck.

Nut isn't glued yet, because I need to finish and string it before doing final setup.

Body is like 2mm too thin, so the bridge block pokes out the cavity a little, (had to get a bow out of the wood)

So I'm going to double up my trem covers and cut out the middle of one of them so that it's still covered.

You'll see once I get it finished.

I'm not looking forward to painting because I don't really have an adequate place here to paint.. where I lived before the divorce, I had a garage.. my place I rent on my own with the kids has nothing, no carport or shed.. and it feels impossible to sand out all the imperfections... And this paint will show all of them...

If I had your talent I wouldn't have spent all that money on expensive guitars. Nicely done, Simon.

How close to the bottom of the cavity should the block even be... Right now it's flush/slightly out
