SIlky oak EVH

Post by willow13 »

Popped in and saw Adrian a few weeks ago and pick up 2 silky oak tops, a kwila neck and a maple fretboard. Day off today so made some good progress

First silky is going to be an EVH style with alder/sapele body, set neck

Image Image

getting the positioning for the neck

am going to try and do a veneer of the off-cut of silky on the headstock

cheers Danny.

Took the day off and got to do some building without getting interrupted. Am nearing completion of that Jackson body you gave me...neck is made, just need to tidy up the fret work and finish the shaping of the back once I string it up

Very nice. I've actually been thinking about a Silky Oak (B&S) archtop build, so I'm excited to see how this looks with finish on it.

looking good Dave - going to route for a floyd? Adrian is a good man...

So you planning on a green stain then - what else for the finish?

Like that alder of yours too, some nice spalting by the look.

no not doing a floyd and no not going green...that was just part of a test run I was doing. Will most likely be amber/orange ish and will probably do a painted black back although still bot totally sure yet (last time I tried to stain this alder black it went a funny greenish colour)

it is looking like all the alder I have will have the same spalting...all I can think is the trees I cut down were constantly being trimmed to keep them tidy so they never got to grow to their potential which I think meant they stayed in some form of shock which keeps them open to disease (this theory is based on years of working with plants not any "science" knowledge..but I think its bang on haha)
