I'm quite open minded when it comes to music, but I can't find a single thing positive about this song, its just so dreadfully bland!

That's why I tend to play it at least once per set.
This is why I don't think I could ever do the covers band thing, having to play songs to appease people who don't actually like music.

I think the universe was well and truly telling you its time Bruce
I was a covers-band whore from 15 through 27 years of age. For the money I was making as a teenage muso, I would play whatever the fuck the punters wanted.
If the weeks pay is determined by playing covers then yes
I’ll have a dig through and see if I can find some ‘90s set lists

I'll never forget the time the Mint Chicks soundguy throttled me by the scruff of my shirt (literal chokehold), guitar in hand heading to the stage, and told me to finish by 9pm, not a second over, or he'd pull the effing plug because "I'm not here for you, I'm here for the Mint Chicks" - I so regret not braining him with my axe.

Or the time we drove 6 hours to Wellington to play 2 songs before being shut down because they just opened an apartment complex across the road from the bar and the bar was being inundated with noise complaints for weeks (thanks for telling us...).

Gigging is such an effort, and gets harder as you get older. The only time it's enjoyable is in the moment, during the set, when all the BS fades away and it's just about the music. That moment has to be powerful and it has to mean something to you and only to you, or it's simply not worth it. The only thing harder is actually finding other musicians who aren't shady and lazy, to be in the band with.

I applaud your move, but hope you don't give up on music itself - and go back to gigging when the time is right :)

When you cross that line of being more irked by the associated crap than elevated by the joy of playing it's time to back away.
This!
And I'm still playing; that will never stop.

Try not to be aggrieved with the Bass Player, as the principle musician in the band he would have many options and was probably trying to help out!
You give him too much credit. His wife was there.

No, it's a Bob Dylan song. There are no limitations to how you interpret it. It's excellent raw material if you're good enough.

And on that note, given modern pop music is constructed to appeal to the masses rather than for its value as art, the masses are philistines with no actual love for music.
