Tube screamer boost thing with high gain amp

Post by Darth Sabbathi »

I've been meddling with high gain amps recently, including a new EVH 5150 iii (thanks willow13!) Digging it a lot, especially in tandem with my Orange (crunchy with a chewy centre).

I've seen a lot of people using tube screamers as a boost - particularly the Maxon OD808. Anyone here do this thing? Does it make much difference which of the zillion screamer type pedals you use? I'm looking at an Ibanez TS9, a TS 808, a Cusack Screamer, and a Behringer TO800 - kind of leaning towards the Behringer to be honest... cheap and cheerful.

Also not entirely sure I need the boost... I'm actually pretty happy with the sound of the amp on its own. But, you know, GAS...

It just sort of tightens everything up a little bit, I wuldnt say you get much of a boost out of it. The TS minis are good value.
Loving it so far

When you're using a TS to tighten things up and the TS has extra EQ capabilities, it really helps.

Anything with a mid push and a bass cut filter.

Guessing the 5150 III can handle it on its own.

When I had a tube amp of the marshall flavour, it had a pull put for extra gain stage, but this was noisier than I would like so I used a Joyo Sweet Baby into it instead, got that same gain boost but without the noise, shame you're not in Chch I could lend you one to try!

$55 delivered from Dave: https://guitarstuff.co.nz/pedals.html absolute bargain! And a very cool EQ on this pedal, its a clone of the Mad Professor Sweet Honey OD.

I've tried a TS Mini with my TI100 and I didn't like the sound. I'd consider it a modern high gain amp. Then again I've got a lot of mids being generated by the pickups and speakers.

I think using a mid boost is a hangover of a remedy for amps of old and modern designs account for it. Much like active pickups.

Gojira use the new EVH amps and PAF style pickups and they are heavy as.

Then again, cheap thrills etc...

Another one that seems popular is this: https://reverb.com/item/1885319-tc-elec ... ted-preamp

The Fortin 33 is super popular and also based on that. They're just clean boosts afaik, but people go nuts for them.

Luckily you don't have to pay stupid prices for them, because Peper's Pedals makes a pedal that incorporates both of them https://peperspedals.bigcartel.com/product/dirty-tree

a Rat or Cusack screamer make a great clean/dirty boost.

I use a Zen Drive after much fluffing around
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.

Boss sd1 is classic for that. Dirty boost and it tightens up low end so things don’t get woofy

Lol, I actually already have a Dirty Tree! Hadn't got around to trying it with the EVH... but have now, and it sounds awesome! I'm not particularly into the 33 mode (too bright for me), but the TC is massive.

I sort of doubt you'd like tubescreamers since they are like the exact opposite to fuzz pedals frequency-wise haha.
Amps:
Soldano SLO100 x2 | Wizard MC1 & MC2 | Diezel Herbert
Fryette Pittbull CL | Marshall 2203KK | Krank Rev 50 | Mesa Mark 2A

Rack stuff:
VHT/Fryette GP3, GP/DI & 2/90/2 | Peters FSM/Chimera
Verellen Meatsmoke | Synergy SYN1 | Mesa Studio

Ah well, see that's what I'm going for. Mixing it up with two amps - trying to fuse a spitting, doom laden fuzz tone with a tight, pummeling high gain sound. Like an unstable gas giant wrapped around a super-dense core... or something. I think because the frequencies are so distinct, they won't cancel each other out.

The Dirty Tree has really kicked it up another gear, but still keen to experiment with a tube screamer.

And I have to confess that these days I'm just using a treble booster for the fuzziness. For live shows at least. The Tone Benders get a good work out in the studio.

All the hip kids are selling their tubescreamers for TC Integrated Preamp variants so I think you're doing fine here haha.
