Your sound......
With the long weekend I’ve had the chance to play thru some gear that usually sits idle the bulk of the time.
One thing that’s become apparent is I tend to sound quite similar regardless the guitar/amp combo.
Of course there will variances to a certain degree but I think it must be an unconscious thing in how I like an amp eq’d or how I attack the strings.
I have noticed it with a couple of other people before, funny it’s taken this long for the penny to drop for me.

Yep, I always tend to sound pretty similar no matter what gear I'm using. Also, from the various Tronfests I've been to Grant can play any guitar through any amp and still sound awesome.

Agreed, in fact I've become quite good at dialing in "my sound" whenever I'm tweaking a new amp. I can only get so far with some amps, but it is very much a case of I know what I like.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Yes, naturally.Molly wrote:Do you not find that you vary your style depending on the tone?
Cleans played with a lighter touch, however attack increases the more agressive the sound.

Ryan too, anything sounded huge with him playing thru it.

Re: Your sound......
I generally just gravitate to certain sounds - marshall gain, fender tweed, vox edge of breakup. etc Don't know why I ever buy anything new, just spent an hour or so programming the same sounds into the Helix. Lol.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I’ve realised that I’m very good at dialing in not quite the sound I like. It’s the cause of much gear cycling.

I find that different tones bring out different styles and often really different ideas. A lot of the things I’ve written have come out of finding some new sound and getting inspired by it.Molly wrote:Do you not find that you vary your style depending on the tone?

This is basically me to a tee. Mind, I think I’m pretty good at making the most of a “bad gear situation”.bender wrote:I’ve realised that I’m very good at dialing in not quite the sound I like.
Most of the issues with “my sound” come from conflicting ideas of what things should sound like.
I don’t really have the means to test said ideas in a full band context outside of garageband.

Slightly dirty amp with a spluttering fuzz driving it to oblivion

Re: Your sound......
yeah As you know Phil I realised it decades ago when I played Tony's Les Paul and it sounded thin and wimpy like all my guitars do but sound huge and fat you guys played it ... I have become very aware of things I do with picking that kind of define what it is I see as "my sound"
I tend to EQ every amp roughly the same or at least try dial in the sound I want to hear. When I play through amps which aren't gain monsters I realise a big reason I can't get them to sound good is my light attack with hitting chords etc...with amps like that you have to bang the shit out of the strings, not pat them like a cat
In regards to people making everything sound great, I think it has a lot to do with confidence and knowing how to get the sounds out of the things they are using

Re: Your sound......
An extension to this whole thing and relating to the ‘Grant makes everything sound amazing’ comments...
I’ve settled on a ‘sound’ as such over the years. Got the guitar and amp combo that gives me a buzz whenever I play.
What’s fascinating is how amazing they sound when you hand them to someone else to play!
Things sound so different you wouldn’t think it was the same gear.

Re: Your sound......
I heard a story about Billy Gibbons goin' into a room full of amps and guitars, but no matter what he played he still sounded like Billy Gibbons.
