I commented that my old Yamaha had a single coil voice. This got Jay riled up because they're humbuckers, he claimed.
To keep the story short, he pulled them apart and whaddya know; Slowy's ears work just fine!

Now here's proof what a wonderful place NZG is.
Where else could you discover someone's nicked two coils out of your 60 year old guitar and hear the words, " No problem, there's a couple of original spares on that shelf over there."

Jay and Mr.Glyn both hold these Yamaha humbuggies in high regard; I now understand why. Thanks Jay, the guitar is transformed!

But now he's given me a dilemma. I've not paid close attention to the orange beast despite Jay's efforts to offer it.
But now I have. I'm pretty much settled into being a pickless fingerpicker these days (can't remember how to use a flatpick).

For that style of playing, these DeArmond style pups are the best thing I've ever heard. I can't believe it's taken me this long!

There are some Gretsch Dynasonics pickups for sale on Faceboook - are they the same thing?

We had a good laugh after opening up that pickup... Later that night I also wrote down a 100 times: 'never doubt Slowies ears'

The dude that removed the humbucking coils was a real idiot. He also replaced the original pole pieces with m3 screws... the remnants hardly qualified as a pickup.

I built that guitar as a copy of a Gretsch 6120. The early version had a Bigsby and my own pickups - see link below. Slowy is currenly experiencing modification number four or so, without bigsby, a downsized neck profile and TV Jones D'Armonds.

Someone somewhere for reasons known only to themself, removed one of the two coils from each pickup.

I guess it would be kinda cool having single coil bridge and neck and the option of a humbucking middle position, maybe thats what they were after?

Their design already gave them a single coil flavour. Read up on Mr Glyn's analysis of this pickup.

Nice. My fave Gretsch model. Had an early 60's one for a few years. Bought off Mick Ralphs who had left it exposed to the sun for so long it was blonde rather than orange. Only Gretsch neck profile I've gottten along with..
