NGD: Charvel

Post by MogwaiBoy »

Turns out my dream HH Tele is actually a Charvel - which is still technically a Fender. A Charvel Pro Mod So Cal Style 2 in Snow Shite to be exact.

What a mouthful it is to type in that model name - but what a gorgeous model she is.

Push-pull coil split and modern/vintage voice switching means this will go places I want it to go (from super clean to super saturated)

Such a joy to play (fairly averagely in my case). The neck is smooth and fast. My first reverse-headstock guitar so will take a little getting used to. Tele's are in my heart but I'm not a purist - so I was looking for a modern, versatile riff machine with a Tele vibe and this delivers.

Loving that. The reverse headstock, selector placement, 24 frets. Winner
Loving it so far

I remember when these came out - not this specific model, but the San Dimas and So Cal range. The tele shape was not super popular, so the prices became super friendly. Great guitars.

It's leans slightly on the thinner side and is very comfy. Makes me wish I could shred! It's not far off (slightly thinner than) my Fender American Deluxe Tele's maple neck thickness I reckon - but I'll have to compare side by side, one in each hand.

Welp. Arizona we have a problem.

I am on the 3rd battery in as many weeks. Turns out the active pickups drain the battery even while unplugged. Kills a fresh battery in a matter of a few days, untouched in its case in the wardrobe. Really sucks! The first battery change was IN THE SHOP when I went to buy it, which should have been a warning sign to me but I just dismissed it as a faulty battery or whatever.

Then after a few days at home the signal was dead again, so I checked the new battery and it was dead. By this point I was thinking hmmmmm. So I put a new one in and that died by the following weekend. After that I put one in, making note of how much juice was in the battery, and tested it over a couple of days to confirm it's draining.

I've done a little digging and although it seems rare, it does happen. Likely a wiring or connection issue in the control cavity.

This is my second strike on Fender QC this year, with my last guitar purchase attempt having microphonic pickups.

All I want is a reliable instrument free of major defects!

Have gone back to the retailer - see what happens. It plays great, that's for sure.

Stink! Hopefully they’ll be able to sort it out for you- one of the rare situations where a warranty on a guitar is a really good thing!

I just re-read your original post and enjoyed this a lot:

I'm guessing a wiring issue causing it to assume that you have the jack plugged in all the time.

This is the only downfall of the solder in wiring vs the plug in of the EMG's.
