Hunt for Gibson Thread
Have spotted this 2004 SG Special on FB but not keen to buy something without playing it first, this is obviously not possible as it’s in Auckland, next best thing would be for a fello forumite to view for me.
Anyone available this week to do that?

Re: Anyone in North Auckland able to view a guitar for me?
I don't think it's overpriced. What Duncan's are they? Looks quite unique and cool with that pickguard too. I don't think you'd lose money on it.

I'm in Red Beach Reg - might be able to help you out if you're still keen. I don't know much about SG's though - just saying.

Re: Anyone in North Auckland able to view a guitar for me?
I have a mates 2006 SG special here at the moment with a crack in the headstock, it’s a pretty common issue I think.
Hence my hesitation to buy without viewing in person.
I’m not sure where the gloss special sits in terms of quality, we’re they better than the faded specials like this which came a few years later? Because I think this faded special is ok but not as good as a bunch of other Gibson’s I’ve tried.

Yeah I'm definitely aware of headstock breaks/repairs. Just not so adept at provenance of year/originality!

Quality wise, they should be the same. Neck profiles were the same too (reasonably chunky?).Reg18 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 19, 2021 7:09 pm I have a mates 2006 SG special here at the moment with a crack in the headstock, it’s a pretty common issue I think.

Re: Anyone in North Auckland able to view a guitar for me?
Looks like it’s sold now anyway.
Im still keeping my eye out for cheaper Gibson.
This one is at a local Pawnshop, 2015 Les Paul Les + which is a thin body LP, they are wanting $2400. It seems the purists online aren’t fans of this model so is it really worth that much? (Robot tuners have been replaced already!)

Re: Anyone in North Auckland able to view a guitar for me?
I thought they almost had it right with the Less+. They did some worthwhile things like the zero fret, adjustable nut, titanium saddles, and a contoured back.
But since it's Gibson they undermined their own work with shitty tuners, the dodgy coil split toggle (just use a push/pull?), the thinner body, and the weird script logo.
I think it's a few hundred overpriced since it's not really the most desirable or collectable model and it was short lived, but in this market maybe $2400 for a USA LP isn't the craziest and maybe the lighter weight and other features might turn the market around in a few years as with enough time the quirks become the selling points.
I wonder if Gibson were still using layered fingerboards at this time. I know they were in 2012 and 2013 but am not certain how long that carried on for.

The neck is wider too, doesn’t feel that unusual but you can tell it’s a bit wider. Seemed to play really well, almost like holding an SG it’s so thin!NippleWrestler wrote: ↑Mon Dec 20, 2021 9:38 am I thought they almost had it right with the Less+. Re: Hunt for Gibson Thread
Does anyone have experience with the newer Les Paul Tribute models?
I’m guessing Rockshop might do a GST off Boxing Day sale hopefully which would make these pretty attractive price wise.
