6G15 Reverb Unit GAS

Post by mugamee »

Hi Team,

Ever since the lockdown, I have been listening to a lot of 60s surf music and this has led me to a serious GAS towards a Fender Reverb unit. I need tubes and springs and drips LOL. I do not have enough cash to buy a vintage unit--what would the surf enthusiast here recommend? Weber kits etc2x? Thank you.

I built a Fender 6G15 clone in 2019 (not a kit but a ground up build with a purchased chassis) and tweed cab by BG. It sounded 'effing awesome I gotta say and now I understand "drip"! That cost $1200.00 to build then, so it would be more expensive now. If you have a kit in mind I'm happy to cast my eye over it or build it for you if you wanted. It was sold to a member here...

Cheers Mike. At the moment and with my limited knowledge re: reverb units (LOL), I am looking buying this-- https://www.tedweber.com/5g15-c-kt/ . How much would you charge (ballpark) to build this? :)

So I notice a couple of things with the kit.
1. It uses a 6V6GT instead of the 6K6GT as used in the original Fender 6G15s. I think that Fender use a 6V6GT in their 6G15 reissues anyway and I don't think it will make any noticeable difference to the reverb tone produced.
2. The kit does NOT use an Isolated Ground Bus scheme and nor does the original Fender 6G15. But I discovered with my 6G15 clone that hum was a problem so I ended up installing an Isolated Ground Bus scheme to fix the issue (which it did). Of note, Fender actually uses an Isolated Ground Bus scheme on their 6G15 reissues. In the old days the hum wasn't an issue because the mains Earth wasn't connected to the equipment chassis (in fact mains Earth didn't exist in household wiring)! But on equipment made today, mains Earth MUST be connected to the chassis and it is this that causes the ground/Earth loop hum.

I could build the kit as is and you can decide if the hum is acceptable - say $250.00 for me to build it as is.
Or, I can supply the extra parts needed for an Isolated Ground Bus scheme, drill out the jack holes on the chassis to accept the insulating washers and build the scheme in from the get-go. Much easier to do it at build time as opposed to retro-fitting. Add $100.00 if done at the time of the build.

This thread may be of interest
It's a slow burn. I have all of the components sans valves. Cabinets still mturing in an oxygenless tank in Zurich.

Surfy bear make an excellent non-valve alternative. They’re really well regarded in the surf guitar nerd scene. I’d definitely check them out!

Is it a valve kit set? Which one?

Surfy Bear kits are non-valve analog kits from Surfy Industries.

It's exactly what I have- a pre built PCB that you simply wire knobs and jacks to and then house. They're FET based rather than valves. They sound excellent.
