If you use a lot of distortion, sometimes a compressor doesn't add much

If you were referring to my compression deafness then no, I mostly do barely edge of break-up to mild crunch.

I was indeed. If you ever get a chance, try the Boss CS-3 set to stun. You'll hear that one :-)

Compressors for me add some sustain but most importantly make clean tones sound incredible to my ears, adds more depth and presence :)

Aren't they designed to reduce the depth of the waveform?

There's a really good YouTube vid by Paul Davids. I'd post the link but I'm out and about on my phone right now.

It might be what makes it sound more full!

They're designed to even out the amplitude of the signal, lowering the spikes and boosting quieter bits. I suspect the boosting part is responsible for the increase in sustain.

It’s often a feel thing.

For the chicken pickin’ thing, a Tele into a DynaComp (plus some slap back delay) pretty much nails it. Have been through a pile of compressors recently and none of them do that particular sound as well as the DynaComp. The TPS guys were right about that.

Boss CP1-X. Kinda boring name. It really should just be called the BETTERIZER! Tone just gets better when this thing is on.

Kinda sweetens and subtly fills out the guitar frequencies while giving it that compressor 'closeness'. I wanted something subtle and clean with no mush or hiss... this is it. Multiband digital awesomeness. Always on. Yay! :)

Just by the by....I really don't get compressors for my type of tone deal.

I have amps on break up for clean. I never really play clean to be fair. If I use a compressor, all the gain hit & punch goes, and I get a shit sound.

It's that simple for me.

I hear ya Grant! A few months ago 'clean' sounds on my plexi were when I rolled the volume back or split a coil. Switching to blackface, I've been working from a clean platform instead, it's been quite an adjustment.
