Get your GAS now, Rosewood restrictions from 2nd Jan

Post by philipnz »

Just thinking about another guitar so email Wildwood Guitars, one of the biggest dealers in the USA and who I've bought a lot through in the past.

Got this reply
Philip,

Thanks so much for the interest!

Alas, we do not have any #####'s in stock. We do have one order that will probably be 5 months out at this time.
Unfortunately though I cannot sell or ship a ##### outside the USA. Sorry, it is part of our dealer agreement.
Starting Jan 2nd I cannot even sell a used one outside of the US either… after that all species of Rosewood are extremely restricted and will require a permit to cross any border between countries. This will affect our ability to ship you any of the other brands we carry too unfortunately.

Let me know any questions you have, I am happy to help!

All the best

Lance B.
Sounds like this could put the brakes on buying out of the USA

One silver lining is that you won't have to show the instrument's entire history if you want to travel with your pre-war Martin or whatever.

Shit. That's a big deal, eh? So how, if the dealers can't sell you a rosewood neck guitar, can the manufacturers ship them here?

They'll just need export licences, right?

Does this ban apply to ALL kinds of rosewood, including Indian Rosewood? That does not sound right...

No, no... ALL types. It's just too hard for a customs guy to distinguish one kind of rosewood from another.

Glad I got my Suhr T when I did! Looks like the yellow dream may be beyond me now as a result of this, but the white will suffice

A paragraph from that article:

" Rosewood is also used to make some musical instruments, such as guitars, but the new rules will not prevent musicians travelling with their instruments."
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

I guess travelling with an instrument you just bought whilst visiting CA is a grey area then ;-)

Here's a Fretboard Journal article with a question about touring musicians and their guitars. You need to get a passport for the guitars. The link includes a 38 minute podcast, but you might find the other links useful. As this is a magazine that covers guitar builders as well it should have the good oil.

I think the biggest critical path is whether NZ customs would care
