Camera advice...

So, I know a few of you folks are pretty good at taking nice fancy pics of your gear, so maybe you can advise me.

I'm looking to buy my first decent DSLR camera over the next few months for the first time in about 10-15 years. I've not felt the need for one in recent years with the improvement on smartphone cameras being optimal for my needs, and the basic low-end digital camera being fine for holiday snaps.

Photography was a side-hobby of mine in my teens and I had a functional Polaroid up until the 90's. I'm looking to get back into it and kinda want something snazzier than cheapo digi-cam from DSE or the like. Mostly looking to do live gig photography, landscapes, etc.

Basically, it's been about two decades since I dealt with decent cameras, and have no idea where to start. Help?

Well, I figure you kinda have to spent $500-1k to get something decent, yeah? So in between that. But it probably only has be entry-level at this stage.

My 650D was 1-1.2k new for just the body from memory. Roughly 1600 for a kit including those 2 basic lenses from canon. I think. This was several years ago, but is probably a good indicator of what you'll be spending for an entry level body that will also last a while. It's the lenses which are more important and more expensive.

DSLR's are dead, Mirrorless is the way forward. (unless you shoot sports)

I have sold my Nikon gear (over $10K's worth) and gone Sony A7II for the serious stuff and Fuji X100T for the everyday stuff.

I agree with Sizzling on this. I moved to Fujifilm X-E2 and haven't looked back to my Canon 550D. The Fuji is much more portable and better image quality. The only slight downside is AF speed. I'd give those Sony A7s a go if I could afford one, but they are a little out of my budget at the moment.
Smallish budget - Sony A6000
Medium budget, with interchangeable lens - Fuji X-T10
Medium budget, with fixed lens - Fuji X100T
Big budget - Sony A7 (there's a few different models here...I'm no expert on the differences)

Sony A7II is the all-rounder, A7S Specialises in video and is more expensive, A7RII is massive mega-pixels and massive price. (don't get the older A7 or A7R)

Sony A6000 or Fuji XT10 would be my recommendation and I'd probably take the Fuji if it was my money.

I'm still pretty much just a happy snapper, but I've found the lighting while taking the photo to make the most difference in how good it turns out.
