They are cool sounding for sure. The 20 watt JMP 2061 ones that Paul Gilbert often uses sound great as well. It's just that I am much more familiar with the JMP 1987 curcuit. I would be more comfortable attempting that.

The other thing is that the lad likes cranking the 50 watt Plexi into a 2x12 so much that he thinks he will like 100 watts with a 4x12 even more, which is why I am thinking of that option too. He plays all this tricky Lamb of God stuff, but the Plexi gets him saying he would like to be in a band that just bashes out AC/DC style chords and riffs. He is a convert to the Plexi kerrang it seems :)

Being able to do the build is one thing, but what it comes down to is if he is prepared to sink money into it. I am not going to be paying for it all myself :D

Got an MIJ Greco EW on the way from Japan.

Interesting little thing. Les Paul scale and woods, shaped like a PRS (ish), bolt on neck with threaded inserts as standard, yet has a trem. Since I got my Charvel I've really enjoyed little flutters for the end of arpeggios so this seems like a good thing, and it was made at Fujigen.

KSGER T12 soldering station and a few other bits and pieces for building pedals. One of these kits to build a little buffered splitter arrived today – thought it'd be a good simple project to start with.

New (to me) bass being picked up today....

Mexi Jazz five string. I won't see it for a couple weeks, as it's being picked up by someone their way to Wellington, brought back when they return. Because cash converters in palmy wouldn't ship - and pack and send would have been $cary I think.

They keep telling me tone is in the fingers, but I have yet to see a "look at my fingers" thread.

Picked up one of these Debut 50R's cheap on TradeMe, going to use it as a more portable practice amp.

Image
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...
