Yeah, I'm going down the route of splicing wires in the pickups cavity, leaving the rest of wiring and electronics well alone.
Find some neat, wee plugs and attach them to the wires such that you can quickly swap and change. That'd be my approach.
I thought about that but didn't know what types of connector would be good for this purpose

I just had a quick look on Jaycar but couldn't see anything. Maybe a hi-fi connector of some sort.

It seems molex connectors will do the trick for me.
