Yeah, I like that it has a built in tuner too. How’s it sound?

I didn’t buy one as I decided to get the terror stamp and build a cab instead but I was pretty close to pulling the trigger!

No surprises coming from me but imo a Katana 50 will see him way further along his journey than pretty much any of the other amps that you mentioned.

I'd go the katana 50. It would be great for what he wants.

Definitely considering one.

I like the look of the Orange practice amps too though. Anyone tried one?
Preset and forget is a good thing about something like a katana or Yamaha thr
Dial in his sound/s and save to presets
And yeh, sounds rad thru headphones.

You mean other than cute as a button?
Heh, yeah. I remember well back in the day there was a range of them, the 18w had a good reputation, wasn't sure if it extended to the 5w.
I remember a gearfest or two in Petone where there were a few of those. :)
They were a really excellent pedal amp, no character otherwise.... 30 watt head was the one ;)
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Cheers. I think a Katana or something like this will actually be a turn off to him. He’s not interested in exploring lots of sounds- just wants to turn on, set the gain where he wants it, and play. Too many options just makes him disinterested.

He also doesn’t want a desktop amp as it would take up valuable lego display real estate.

Just when you thought the universe could not get any more bizarre, here’s Ben asking about cheap heavy metal amps. :-)

The things we do for our kids, eh?

I should add- I already have a Vox Adio that sounds great- that’s how I know about the options disinterest. I’m looking to reclaim my Quilter 101 from him, and he really likes the simplicity of that.

I’m not writing off a katana BTW, but thought I’d see if there was anything positive to say about any of the other, simpler options in that price bracket. I like the look of the Orange Crush 20RT.

If a Katana 50 pops up for a good price, I’ll likely grab one

Mk1 Katana's usually go for about $350 or less if you're tinny. It can be used as set and forget.
