Marantz PM-64 Mkii - troubleshooting

Post by null_pointer »

I dug this out of my pile of boxes from the mid-2000s not long ago, with the intention of pairing it with some speakers I acquired from Oleg. I recall it being fine going into the box (OK, that may have been before John Key was PM, but hey...). Have an issue with the left channel on both sets of speaker outs (has two) - no output. Right channel fine, tested speakers and inputs to ensure it wasn't something random like selector issues. Have also used the CD/Phono direct to test it wasn't a dodgy balance (this seems to work fine when sweeping to the working side.
Anyone know where you'd start the process of looking at likely problems? There is a point in the process where I'd just find someone to look at it for me, but if its something that could be troubleshooted with reasonable ease I'd hate to have missed a trick before resorting to the professionals...
I'm thinking putting a multimeter on the left channel poles might be a good idea to see if anything is being outputted?

Its this one, in case anyone is interested in what one looks like, or wants to know whats on the front/back:

Contact cleaner in the ports/terminals maybe? I've had spiders make homes inside jack sockets before.

A can of contact cleaner and go over all the pots and switches. Doubt that it is much more serious than that...

Thanks I’ll give it a bash. Hopefully nothing too major, be a waste of what used to be a great class A/B amp

Be sure to use an actual electronic contact cleaner, not CRC 5.56 or regular WD-40. Both companies however do make products especially for this purpose that you can get for a hardware store.

Bashing it is probably a bit extreme, but to echo everyone else, proper contact cleaner works wonders.

My Arcam Alpha 7 had an issue where it would only work on one channel unless you jiggled the volume control around. Eventually it became no channels, so took it to a hifi repair specialist and he sorted it out, he just went through the amp with contact cleaner.
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.

Check the headphone out to see if it works for both channels, then try the L and R outputs of the Tape 1 & 2 channels. That'll at least tell you if it's the preamp/front end or power amp that's not passing a Left=channel signal. If the other outputs work and it's just the L speaker out that is stuffed, it'll be time to open it up and have a look inside for any visible issues. You may want to hand it off to a repair person at that stage.
