H671 pointed to a forum thread dedicated to the VHT.... It comprises 60 odd pages so a bit long but I read the first few pages in which VHT designers also participated.

The gist I got from those few pages was that the design had to have the lowest possible cost and number of components.

One 'victim' of that approach would be the flexibility of pot based tonestacks.

Note that the VHT has no base pot and that the chosen resistor equates to a pot setting of around 85%. So lots of low frequencies are still going through to the output.

A temporary base pot would help you define where your sonic preferences lie. You can then put a new resistor value in to accommodate that taste.

I am not a fan of this type of amp as you need to be constantly soldering things... I prefer the 'plug and play' of an old fashioned tone stack with pots. Pay a bit more for flexibility on demand
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

So..... Which combination has the magic?

To be honest, I'm starting to see the advantages of a Kemper.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Kemper has the same versatility, but you don't burn your fingers.
