NAD: Mesa Boogie F-50

Post by Jake »

Picked this up today. Older model but has some pretty nice features: https://mesaboogie.com/support/out-of-p ... eries.html

Fired it up with the Tele. REALLY like the clean tones on this - heaps of headroom, does the Fender-y thing well even at low volumes.

Drive channel - sounds awesome but not at low volumes. With the gain and master down it almost sounds like a preamp tube is on the way out - gave them a tap with a pencil and non are microphonic but might find a spare and swap them out one at a time.
But with a bit of volume behind it sounds absolutely killer. Real bummer I can’t crank it at home (upstairs neighbours) but am itching to take it to the practise room and turn it up.

Those are awesome amps. I bought one when they first came out. Great clean tone, as you say.

Ive still got a Express 50 , 1 x 12 sitting in the closet gathering dust. Any offers considered - no rush to sell as such but Id rather see it used.

That's the plus version which addressed customer feedback of the non-plus model. Not sure what Lawrence has in his closet mind you.

Took the combo to a practise room so I could properly crank it and A/B test it with the Iridium, which I’ve been using for the last few months.

I love the convenience of the Iridium and being able to practise through headphones but man the F-50 just sounds exactly how I want it to….guessing I could get the Iridium sounding better if I was using a better powered speaker etc. but there’s something so satisfying about getting some tubes hot and letting rip.

hi
mine does not have the graphic. Great amp - just never use it.

I agree. Its just the way tube amps cut through too. They have a presence and punch that most modelers cannot replicate. My Fm3 however has an excellent sound going through the PA which actually is pretty difficult to replicate when mic'ing a cab.

You should try running the Iridium into the effects loop, with the pedals power amp and speaker modelling turned off. That'd be an interesting test.

There's nothing quite like a power amp pushing speakers, and I'm a big fan of modelling gear. I've run the Iridium through my Marshalls effects return with cab modelling off and it does sounds really good.

I'd love a nice Mesa 1x12 to play in stereo with my Marshall but that's probably never gonna happen haha.

There's an F-30 on trade me atm, I'm guessing that's priced quite a bit higher than what most would expect to pay?
