Speaker preferences

Out of curiosity, I sat down with a mate with audiophile ears and worked through my small collection of speakers. I have a default choice but it was time to look at it objectively.

In 1x12 cabs I have
Celestion Blue
Celestion G12H30
Fane Alnico 12
An ancient Jensen Special Design

Also have a 2x10 with Warehouse can't remember the model. (in band room).....G10?

Short answer, the Fane blew everything away. It's really articulate, piano like; the highs are clear and warm without any harshness. Tight botton end and just the right anount of mids to cut through a band. It was not only the best sounding speaker with the band, it was also the best sounding speaker in the lounge which seems to me an improbable feat.

Second best in the lounge was the Jensen. This thing is 60 years old and all its brightness has worn away. This makes it lovely with a Telecaster but I doubt humbuckers would be happy.

The combination of the G12 and the Blue come very close to the Fane but in a bigger, more cumbersome package without the Fane's 80watt power capability.

So there you have it. Can't remember who I got the Fane from, but thank you! It's my lifetime speaker,

Nice, is the Fane modelled on a celestion blue? I'm thinking of getting the Weber DT10-P for my AC10 which is a blue like speaker they've developed for the amp

Interesting. Fane are the speaker of choice for David Gilmore. I have a Fane 150w that I am picking came from a Rockit, and while it's ok, it's also ok.

My favorite speaker is a Mojotone American Vintage 12".

I got rid of two of those once from my JMI AC30, because it sounded like shit. Then found out the OT was incorrect spec...by then they were long gone. Shame.

I understand Fanes were the 'Blue' speakers in the Rose Morris era Vox cabs.
And sadly, I think you made a rare but terrible error.The only other ones I have seen were on Reverb in Allesandro combos.

I sold it to put funds towards a Celestion Blue and G12H in a cab as I thought that would be better, I don’t think it really was though. Dharmajester might still have one?

It isn't. That's my favourite speaker pairing but the Fane is smoother, more integrated; just a classier, more pleasing sound that gives nothing away in definition for want of a better description.

They are still in production, a range of alnico & ceramics, UK based and quite expensive. From what I studied Eminence Tonka are a close alternative but not the same according to Fane freaks. Weber also has an offering in the Thames name. Mr Fryette amplification also a Fane lover, check out the 'Deliverance' cab.
My take away from vanishing down the Fane worm hole is they are like a PA speaker.

Correct, I bought yours Grant and was sufficiently impressed that I grabbed another. One eventually went to Reg and I suspect the other may be the one Slowy has. They always struck me as sounding like a greenback, done properly, but of course they are in reality poles apart and also nothing like the Fanes ( these being Alnico ) used in Hi watt cabs etc. Great speakers. Unsure how their current A60's stack up. One would hope they are equally as good.

Awesome Slowy, have you tried a Jensen Blackbird 100watt or WGS Blackhawk HP? Big power alnico.
