Slight Reprise - ÷13 CCC 9-15

Post by GrantB »

Thanks to Conway for selling me back my CCC I had made early 2017.

I think I've found how it works best for my sound...different 6V6 tubes (but left the JJ EL84's alone), and a Celestion Blue. Definitely has that ÷13 sound, slightly honky vintage Marshall/Hiwatt punch with Voxy chime. Currently the EL84 vibe is marginally beating the 6V6....and that preference switches regularly.

It's a heavy mofo though.

Some nerd info.

You can switch on the fly between the 6V6 and EL84 power tubes. I tend to Standby it for some reason. The biggest difference you notice is volume...the EL84's being much louder. I thought I might hear say, a Vox ACXX on the EL side, and a Fender something on the 6V6 side. Its way more subtle than that. It shows the preamp and other components like OT have a big say in how something sounds. Mesa Blue Angel owners will agree with me I am sure.

The pre-volume is a pull switch to engage extra gain.

The circuit likes to work hard in the power stage, at say 3/4's for huge toans, unlike the ÷13 BTR23 which is happy to be down low, merely idling, and still throw out massive bottom end chug. Desert Island, the BTR wins, but it's not as flexy - the CCC can go down very low volumes and still sound great.

I'll try some NOS coin base RCA's in the 6V6 side next. The amp came with modern JJ 6V's (and I'm comparing to older JJ 6V6's, which were awesome) and they were bright, mechanically rattly and basically junk. Conversely, the JJ EL84's sound sweet and zero rattle.

To top it off, the cab work is as usual with ÷13, exemplary.

Rad
Celestion blue is such a great speaker
So loud and grunty too despite its low labeled power handling. I gigged with one in an ac15 for a long time. Something magical about the upper mids

That amp looks gorgeous. It makes sense to me that there would be a lot of other contributors to the tone of an amp that would take precidence before the power tubes.

Yeah. BIG fan of the Blue! Shame it costs so much aftermarket.
