output transformer upgrade ?

Post by StrummersOfThunder »

Hi all
Anyone have experience in OT upgrades?
I know there are all sorts of variations but I was reading about dropping a bigger OT into fender amps.
In my 6g9b tremolux the output tranny os rated at 4ohm so i was thinking of getting a replacement hammomd from mouser so that it had 4/8/16 taps.
Then I thought is there a role for beefing things up?
I have seen places mention using a bassman OT.
What ,if any, difference would this make? (except for gravitational pull on near objects/planets)
Thanks

Bigger OT can increase bass response and headroom. Needs to be matched to the impedance of the output valves on the primary

If you need 4/8/16 speaker taps then you have no choice. But "bigger" OTs don't necessarily make the amp sound better. Different maybe (as Cdog mentioned) but the "special" thing about the tone of your amp might be a slightly underrated OT...

In other words, smaller may give more satisfaction...
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Looks like a Classictone 40-18006 is the equivalent of your 6G9B OT (Fender 125A6A) except it has 4/8/16 ohm output impedances. The Primary impedance is 4 Kohm :) There may be a Hammond equivalent as well. I can get these and install for you so sing out if you want a price.

You will need a primary of ~4000ohms https://www.hammfg.com/part/1760J?referer=1399
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Yes that's the one I came up with.
I guess the two outstanding questions are.:
1. Any difference between brands
2. Is it worth beefing up the thing while I'm at it

I guess 2. Comes down to taste a fair bit..
For surf guitar we are after big bottom end and plenty of headroom

They're both good. I can often get Hammond's cheaper and I use them alot.

1/. See my previous answer.
2/. I think your amp is renowned for a "big" clean tone so the Fender OT is already quite beefy. The stated Classic Tone & Hammond are the equivalent of the Fender OT so I'd stick with either of those.
