Anyone using electrical cord for speaker cable?
Decided it’s time to replace my well worn speaker cables.
Quite liked the old grey Jansen/Proel cable, as it was easy to tell apart from guitar cable. But looks like they don’t bring it in any more.....
As an alternative, I’m currently eyeing up the braided cord on an old vacuum cleaner in the basement.....or perhaps getting some new braided electrical cord (there’s a guy on TM who does heaps of different colours). Irony is it works out cheaper/m than actual speaker cable.....
Anyone done similar?

Yeah, speaker cables made from old Dyson power leads. The only part of the fuckers that doesn't break.

our house goes like this:
be carefull.. breath, grab the red bit from the other way round, wait. stop. just let me do it. ahh let go of it
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.

Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Re: Anyone using electrical cord for speaker cable?
LOL this one has been done to death over the last 40 odd years in HiFi circles. Short answer is that yes speaker cables do make a difference. Havent tried changing cable on my guitar amps tbh as there are so many other variables but in a HiFi system the difference is considerable. I would see as much point using old power leads or 0.75 trurip as I would of buying a Ferrari and putting Chinese double coin tyres on it. Pointless especially when good second hand speaker cable is so reasonably priced.

Re: Anyone using electrical cord for speaker cable?
For guitar amps/bass amps, its more to do with the csa of the cable for power handling, anything else is placebo. The standard cable used in marshall quads and everywhere else including Fender amps since their inception is basically mains cable. Its the only cable that gives you classic tone.
I wouldn't use Dyson cable on anything other than the newer amps, maybe mesa mk3 onwards?

Re: Anyone using electrical cord for speaker cable?
csa = cross sectional area ? Mains cable varies hugely in cross sectional area, many IEC type cables are 0.9, the usual appliance cords are usually max 1,5, whereas 2.5 is the standard heaviest gauge used. As a generalisation in HiFi use: as HF travel along the outside of the conductor, multi stranded small diameter wires will give you more HF, whereas thicker wires will give you more LF. Copper being generally smoother sounding than silver which tends to be brighter. IMHO all this would pale into insignificance in a guitar amplifier as there are so many other factors (not to mention at least probably 2 tone control ccts), however I still think that if I were going to the trouble of building an amp or rewiring an existing one then I would source some nice speaker cable for the job.
