I dunno. Something about squirrels I guess. I'm too lazy to read the manual and find out...

I have KT88 in my TM saved searches. The “low cost” KT88s at like $350 always pops up. For a pair. Really?
My /13 uses them and I’m counting on the set in there lasting until I’m dead. My Princeton has its original RCAs in it - that’s 47 yrs old. So I’ll be 95 before the /13 needs new tubes. I’ll start saving.

I had a box of about a dozen new original Mullard KT88's back in the mid 90's, I gave 4 to my grandad for his Leek HiFi amps and I think the rest went in the skip when I moved house.
Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Cheers man...thankfully I won’t need to buy new kt88s ever (stock in garage!) but my point was over the silly prices asked for them.Mattallica wrote:Tone Lounge?GrantB wrote:I have KT88 in my TM saved searches. The “low cost” KT88s at like $350 always pops up. For a pair. Really?

A quad from Tone Lounge is still $400. Does anyone know why these tubes are so expensive? I’m pretty sure my old gold lions were about $200 for the pair and at the time they were the shizz. The /13 had JJs in it. They do sound good.

Probably because they are less commonly used and have smaller production runs?GrantB wrote:Does anyone know why these tubes are so expensive?

And usually, they are only used by the Djent community and they already have too many strings on their guitars. Who cares if their tubes are spendy?JHorner wrote:Probably because they are less commonly used and have smaller production runs?GrantB wrote:Does anyone know why these tubes are so expensive?
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

The cool thing about KT88's is the power you can get out of them with high plate voltage, grid bias designs. By example JSN880 does 100W clean and 200W maximum power with a pair of push-pull KT88's running in class AB.

You can substitute EL34s for KT88s right? Never really looked into prices but had thought I'd like to try them in my Marshall to see what happens. Sounds like I won't be finding out any time soon.

They're bigger and cleaner sounding than 34's. Wasn't overly impressed with their driven tone but I've only tried them in an Orange Rockerverb I had briefly ( which sounded best with 6L6's).StratMatt wrote:You can substitute EL34s for KT88s right? Hifi and bass amps come to mind first. For me at least...Slowy wrote:And usually, they are only used by the Djent community and they already have too many strings on their guitars.
