Re: NAD!!!!70s Fender amp advise
Although it’s definitely not a bad idea to replace all the electrolytic caps, those big caps in the tray won’t be what’s causing the redplating. That’ll be those two parallel white 80uf/75v caps inside the chassis, near the transformers. When they fail, you lose bias voltage, which means redplating as the 6L6s begin to run wild.

Is it possible to just do a partial recap then? Or is it just wise to replace the lot while your there?RectifiedAmps wrote:Although it’s definitely not a bad idea to replace all the electrolytic caps, those big caps in the tray won’t be what’s causing the redplating. I’ve got it booked in to Guy Benfield at Electric Audio LTD to look at next week in CHCH. Hes done a few old Fenders so I’m hoping he solves the issues.

If you’re taking it to a tech, then do the lot of them. The parts shouldn’t be expensive and it’ll be cheaper labour-wise to do it all at once than in repeat visits. I was thinking if you were doing it yourself you might want to just do the bias caps for now and see where that got you.

Arghhh - just read through the thread and see you've got the pro reverb. It's murphy's law isn't it.

Well sort of, it’s kinda like buying a house. You can get the one that’s already been renovated and pay full price, or you can buy the doer upper and the risk is great but the reward can be worth it. At this stage the investment hasn’t been much in the Pro Reverb so I figured it’s worth a shot.AiRdAd wrote:Arghhh - just read through the thread and see you've got the pro reverb. And I pretty much always like a project, I annoy my wife too much if I don’t have one!

Those Mallory caps look pretty decent for their age. In both of the silverface twins I've had they were extremely convex on the ends.

I agree with what Rectified Amps is saying, getting it done right first time. It'll sound great if given the care/attention/work it requires, which won't be a whole lot.

Re: NAD!!!!70s Fender amp advise
Have dated the speakers to 74, one transformer to 75 and the power transformer to 76 so I guess it’s a 76!
Got it booked in for Tues to get looked at, other than getting re capped, new valves are there any other things I should get done whiles it’s getting serviced? I’m guessing it could be black faced but that may or may not be better, I’m guessing it’s just preference?

It's a preference, try it as it stands once you get it back as you can always blackface it later.Reg18 wrote:Have dated the speakers to 74, one transformer to 75 and the power transformer to 76 so I guess it’s a 76!

If you're taking the amp to Clarry Schollum or John Gilmore(in Hamilton) you're in good hands, they'll give you the low down.
Doin' that scrapyard thing.

I’m in CHCH but there are a couple of good techs here too. Guy Benfield in particular has a bit of a passion for old Fenders and keeping them as original as possible so I’ll be taking it to him.goldtop0 wrote:If you're taking the amp to Clarry Schollum or John Gilmore(in Hamilton) you're in good hands, they'll give you the low down.
I hear a lot of people talk about Clarry though so he must be well regarded.
