Recording Bass Guitar

Post by jeremyb »

After some advice on recording bass, I don't want to buy an amp and mic it, but I see a few options...

My THR10X has a bass mode and I've been using this primarily for recording guitar so far, also has a built in interface so is a good go to for recording.

I also have a M-Audio 2 channel interface so could go direct into that from the bass and use some software amp modelling, or the bass amp in garageband.

Or would I be better off getting something like a Bass preamp and running that into my interface? Something like a Darkglass B7K or SansAmp Bass DI?

The bass has active circuitry if that makes any difference :)

Going completely against what you’ve said,
My amp has a sim out so I use that, and mic it.
I blend them with a simple mixer and eq it in GB.

I had success going straight into the interface and eqing it. The amp models get noisy.

Yeah, kinda keen to see how the THR10X sounds in bass mode when recording via it's built in interface, sounds great for guitar!

If it doesn’t work, go straight into the interface. Find a good enough sound (think GB just calls the default “voice”?) and eq it later.

My production is pretty average but I can get it to work ok.

See if you can figure out a way to also record a DI (or if you're using amp sims on the computer, make a clone of the main signal). Means you can process the shit out of the signal and maintain the bottom end (people often compress the crap out of the DI, and add a low pass on it too)

I haven't tried recording it yet but I bought an iRig adapter for my iPad. For a few bucks here and there, you can run all sorts of branded amp sims (through they're mostly guitar amps) and it has various speaker boxes. You can even "position" a variety of mikes relative the the speakers. The only bass amp it comes with by default is an Acoustic though.
"Vince, have you ever tried playing an expensive bass?" - Polarbear.
"And isn't that the finest acoustic bass guitar feedback solo you've ever heard?" - Billy Moose.

Righto, rather than spend a ton of money on something exotic I've bought one of these Joyo preamp pedals, to my ears it sounds bloody great for bass! Will run it direct into my interface and see how she goes :)

I would go the Eden Di preamp. Eden World tour.
There are still some that think the neck PU is moved to accommodate the extra frets which only proves they cannot detect the difference in length of each.

Not a fan of bass direct to DI, but the DI out on the SVT3pro I had sounded sweet when I recorded it. Amp had an SS power section, so didn’t plug in the cab, headphones from the mixing desk.

Don’t have a bass amp any more so now if I want to record bass I just mic up a guitar amp and play through that. Volume not so loud since I like my speakers.
