FS: 2007 Gibson SG GT – Candy Apple Red

Post by The Scarecrow »

I've come to the realisation that although I've had this one about 12-13 years, it's fallen out of favour with me due to the type of music I play and my sway towards more modern instruments. Testing the waters here, but genuinely keen to sell.

The SG GT was produced for one year (2007) only by Gibson before being discontinued. Designed to be a jack of all trades, the GT combined the thicker slab body of the Standard with the slimmer 60’s profile of the ’61 reissue and a 50’s faux-chromed tailpiece/ racing stripes for a hot-rodded look. This one looks particularly retro in the candy-apple red + black finish, bound ebony fretboard and chrome hardware.

All specs can be found here - https://www.chorder.com/electric-guitar ... /sg-gt-526

I purchased this in 2008 and it was my main guitar for main years as due to the versatile nature. It’s the only guitar with coil-tapping that I’ve owned which actually sounds very close to a single coil – the neck and bridge humbuckers did get close to my Telecaster did when tapped. Saved me having to swap guitars on stage a lot. Also the only guitar I’ve owned where I haven’t swapped out the 49x series pickups – they can do clean and dirty tones really well – I played in a covers band with this and it does almost everything, bar your Nordic-level death metal  Currently strung in standard E with Elixir 10-46’s.

I’ve had it setup and serviced a few times in my ownership, most recently in May 2019 by Andries Vorster at the Fret Shop, though it’s been used about 7-8x in that time as I have another guitar that I favour now and this one has been semi-retired. A few things to note given the age and fact it’s been a well-gigged instrument

- There are some cosmetic blemishes here and there, which in no way affects the playability or tone.
- The neutrik locking mechanism starting jamming after about 10 years of use and I had my luthier disable it. Jack still works, but doesn’t lock anymore – easily replaced if you need to, but I deemed it unnecessary
- I think there’s a few spots on the chromed tailpiece (it’s vac-metallised plastic instead of real chrome but is weighty enough to totally counter that well-known SG ‘neck-droop’ issue) where the finish has work away, but barely noticeable.

Overall, it plays and sounds really good. I recorded this EP with my old band in 2019 which you can hear the guitar on those tracks

These are pretty rare guitars, Gibson only made a few thousand of these in their initial run and apparently only about 400 in this colour, and they haven’t been reissued as the aesthetic is a bit polarising, but they are absolutely solid workhorses.

Prices on Reverb are 7-9k NZ (!) but I’m keen to shift and would consider any reasonable offer (try me), or perhaps a swap for an SG Special/Tele + cash to me.

Happy to ship at your risk and cost, or pickup. I’m happy to arrange a test for serious parties but will need to be at my discretion due to work hours. Auckland based.

More pics available if you're seriously interested.

Yep, that was the look they were going for, which is most apparent on this colour blocking. It's one of those you love it, or don't types.

Mild bump. Will do a good forum price, entertain trades for other guitars + cash to me or look at laybuy/payment plan option.
