Capt. Black Clears Stuff Out Thread.

Post by Capt. Black »

Hi Gents (of all genders)

I have accumulated a shitload of gear and just don't have the chance to make use of it all these days.

Figured I'd see if there was anything of interest to you guys.

First few items are a bit more studio related.

- Avantone CR-14 Ribbon Mic $300.00

Hardly ever used apart from a few recording sessions.

Really nice sounding mic. Especially good on guitar cabs but I reckon it's worth a try on anything. Beautiful warm bottom end (IB:JB) and a gentle roll-off in the highs. Helps tame those screechy speakers. Use with an SM57 or on its own. Tested it yesterday and even on voice it brings out a nice deep resonance.

Comes in padded wooden box with shock mount and Aluminium case.

Next thang...

Zoom H4n Audio Recorder. $280.00

Mostly used for desk recording at the odd gig and occasional field recording.

Includes Case, remote control, extension cable for remote, 1GB and 8GB SD cards, 2 x XLR Attenuator adapters (some desk recordings can be a bit too hot, forcing you to reduce the input gain to 1! Attenuators help to knock the level back so you have finer control of the input levels)

Something for the cork-sniffer...

Grover-Notting CR-2 reference monitors $300.00/pair (NB. Passive speakers. Needs a power amp)

These are something a bit special but maybe only if you have the right setup to take advantage of them.
Traditionally studios would run a "Grot-box" speaker to check how a mix would hold up in a shitty little speaker like a transistor radio of old style TV.
The idea being that the Grots would let you know if something in the mix disappeared and you could fix it.

Auratones became something of a standard, being a single small driver in a cubic box with limited (but mid-biased) frequency response. No crossover. No phase colouration.

As they became rarer, Avantone released a kind of updated copy. My good friend Nigel Russell at Oceania Audio Sales very kindly loaned me a pair to try over a week or so and while I was there, handed me the Grover-Nottings to see what I thought of them too.

Short story: both speakers are in that "if you can make your mix sound good on them, it will sound good anywhere" camp. The difference that swung me towards the G-Ns was that getting there was a lot less horrible than listening to my unpolished mix on the Avantones!

Instead of checking the mix at the end pf the process, I found I could work on the CR-2s for hours without fatigue, only occasionally switching to the big speakers for a bit of change and excitement. I love them so much I still don't want to sell them. But Since I bought a pair of Presonus Sceptre 8s, I don't find I need anything else. The Sceptres are quite amazing no matter if I'm working quietly or loud. It's all there, clear as a bell.

One thing to note is that as passive speakers, the CR-2s need an amp to drive them. I used to have a nice studio power amp for them but more lately just drove them from an old Onkyo hifi amp. Cheap and excellent.

Dig in. :)

Those speakers would be perfect for a home volume (almost)FRFR. Im using similar concept, single near full range driver in a small sealed cab.
 Mids so haunting that demons took over my living room and now my guitar glows!
