Here are a couple of WIP samples of what The Grove have been working on. Horn parts are only temp on the second one but they're fairly close.

We recorded them in my basement studio using Pro Tools and MOTU converters as well as some fancy (and not-so-fancy) mics and preamps. TBH though, the best mics have been the cheaper ones- Cascade Fatheads and a vintage Sennheiser MD412 I scored for about $20.

There's a whole lot more info here about the process:

Thanks for the link - very nice. I just got my gear from the container ship and the house is in a transitional state while we get some work done on one of the rooms. Luckily I just use a laptop with Ardour to record, Hydrogen to play drums, a Kawai bass and a couple of guitars into a Saffire 6 USB either direct or through a miced Vox VT20+. Lucky because I just set up on folding table and started recording amid the chaos. The house and location are very quiet - a far cry from the cicada season in Brisbane. Oh yeah - a Kawai K5000S keyboard for MIDI stuff too - which I can't play but like to have around.

Re your recording diary - I used to have a bandmate who played a C melody sax, but only in C. It was used on a couple of songs, notably "The Invasion of the Sonic Mindwarpers".

One of the goals I have set myself now that I am in NZ is to record a backlog of songs dating back to (in fragmentary memory form) 1977. This is not helped by the fact that on two separate occasions I have thrown out or taped over the written and/or recorded copies of most of the songs, so I am reaching back into the dim recesses of my memory, helped along by a few scraps of paper and old computer backups and even older cassettes of practice sessions.

Cheers

Mike

Posted an 8 string tone test yesterday

first time using an 8 string. It was a lot of fun!

Loving EZ Mix, I've got the full suite now. Actually, band just sorted an endorsement with Toontraack so I have everything now, haha. So much fun!

Thank you! although it's Meshuggah - lethargica, so that's expected, hehe. One of the Metalhead EZ drummer expansions comes with midi groove packs for 5-6 meshuggah songs, I just used that and the koloss guitar and drum presets :)

So jealous - but you're totally worth endorsing so coolness.

I do bugger all music ... last thing I did was a short version of Hotel California for my bass guitar students performance music class. took the intro and most of the solo out. It's a bit ghey - but hey. One take on the rhythm guitar, lead vocals, harmony vocals (deleted what sounded poos) and then some fiddling with the end. The guitar solo was take three as I kept forgetting how it went. Solo is at 3.32 for those who don't want to sit through the vocals.

Yup - that's me and my pal Steve or little stevie vai as I like to call him. In Auckland airport when I was 26. I'm not 26 anymore.
