Fine misty sparkle (eg Fender Firemist), or 50’s heavy flake (eg Gretsch SilverJet)?

Start with the former I guess.

Then I would just ask the shop to mix it for you, or at least the base, and you add the powder last? Shop mix will be best.

Big flakes is usually applied over top of base colour in the clear. I’ve never done it, but it’s a pain from my car painting friends experience.

The former sounds a lot like the metallic paint I've been using recently. It's a prick to work with, to be honest.

When using big flakes, would you apple them over a base coat of a similar colour, or white/black?

Yeah, metallic is a tough gig.

Big flake is always in the clear, over a base solid colour (incl metallic base). You need a bigger nozzle…maybe 2mm at least?

yeah, theres a few threads over in the TDPRI site with sparkle finishes. Its not easy and the finish ends up being real thick to ensure that you get enough clear layer over the sparkle so you don't wet sand through which (from memory) means refinish. Also believe that the sparkle gets everywhere you spray, clean ups a bitch, and you end up using that spray gear forever more just on glitter.

That said, I'd still contemplate doing it - whats the worse that can happen??!!

They don't deal with aerosol droplets though, same reason why we now know they're not as effective for covid protection as its also transmitted as an aerosol

Also using the 3m large fumes rated masks. Only way to go.

After spraying the gloss colour coat, do I need to spray a clear coat, please?
