Converting Tokai strat to master vol/tone?

Post by NippleWrestler »

Morning guys,

I've got a Tokai Goldstar from ~1985 coming in the mail that I'd like to convert to a master tone/vol arrangement. The current wiring looks like this:

And here's a diagram:

I think if I did this following wiring I could omit the middle tone pot (the red wire is the one I would add):

What do you think? Would that work? Looks simple enough to carry out but it's almost too simple.

I know there's strat diagrams all over the place but none use this proprietary switch that Tokai did.

Cheers

That is correct but both bridge and centre pickup will have the same setting for tone which might not be desirable...
Also what do you intend to do with the spare pot then?
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Hopefully everything will have the same tone and vol setup. Maybe if I run the tone pot off the volume pot it'd be better.

It's been a long time but on mine I snipped the lower tone pot out of the picture and hooked one leg of the cap to master vol and the other to ground. Gallagher mod I think. Lower tone pot still there but dead.
2024; I have explored the extent of the perimeter dome, there is no escape. I am become Morpheus

For a master tone you can attach the wire from the tone control, directly to the first lug of the volume control, or the second lug if you like a 50s Les Paul style tone control.

Exactly that sorta thing. That's exactly how a Telecaster is wired, except you have three pickups and a 5 way switch.
