Thanks all.

Will head into Mitre 10 this afternoon for a liquid grain filler. Any particular recommendations?

How are you finishing the body; solid colour or clear?

Solid. Local paint store couldn't source a nitro sanding sealer, so it will be grain filler, primer, solid colour, clear coat.

I use timbermate, but that's from Bunnings. Any wood filler should do ok - go for a water based one. Not really a liquid filler, needs to have some water added to it to make a slurry. With the mahogany you'll need to do 2, if not 3 goes to get the grain filled.

Good luck.

Don't fill the mahogany, look at what a great finish I got on the Mahogany back of my Duovette... without filler, just sanding and oiling.

This. Much prefer the look of unfilled grain on mahogany.

It's practicing for an alder Strat, so am.going to more or less treat it like it's alder.

Ordered nitro clear coat from paint store, and they gave me this. It's poly, right? https://ca.ppgrefinish.com/PPG-Refinish ... hive/MC262

How do you know it's acrylic? They assured me it was nitro.

You make a strong argument, sir.

Here's a picture. When I Google PPG 262 I get the acrylic result above. But surely they wouldn't take to me about nitro for thirty minutes and then give me acrylic?

You need to clarify it with them, the first link says acrylic. This is something you need to do as the customer. It could just be a different designation to what ppg call it. _shrugs_ they're the only ones who can answer this.

that first link says "MC262" presumably that is a completely different product, an acrylic one. Either you trust them or you ask them. I'm sure its nitro.

might be poo for all you know. I made dodgy jerk chicken on the bbq yesterday. Same consistency as nitro on all 6 visits to the toilet this morning... Didn't need thinners.
