Where can I get Nitrocellulose paint in NZ??

Post by johnstratiwant »

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone know where to get nitrocellulose spray paints in New Zealand.

I saw from past post/ forum that Bunnings/ Mitre10 supply nitro spray paint. But my local Bunnings did not seem to know what nitrocellulose is nor have anything like that.

My other option right now is Duplicolor which is acrylic lacquer (which i can buy at repco).

If anyone could help me out, that will be great! :D

Wairau Paint Centre.
Wairau Valley, Auckland
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

Yep bunnings and mitre10 definitely don't do Nitro.

Wairau paints are the best in Aucks. I'm sure there are a few paint places around the country that do them, best give them a call - if they don't they'll point you to a local supplier who does, I'm sure.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I get it from https://smitsgroup.co.nz/articles/413/spraystore-ltd

They used to mix to DuPont codes but now it has to be matched to one of their swatches which can be a bit hit-and-miss.

I've a can in the shed. Will read-off the lacquer code for you tomorrow.

One caveat. Modern nitro doesn't crack with the hot/cold treatment like you might want it to. Not in my experience. Otherwise, it's great. Easy to work with and excellent results.

I just use the code when I go to Spraystore. Last time was a few months ago when I bought some Surf Green (a nice, slightly aged / faded-looking variation anyway). I think it's about $30 a can. I don't use primer generally but on the last used a single off-white base coat. If you contact Smits they'll tell you your local supplier. Good luck.

You can dramatically improve the cracking aging effect by keeping the thinning to around 60/40 or even 50/50 and build up say 15 thin coats over time. Spraying heavy and fewer coats leaves more of the plasticiser in the layer...the way I suggest ensure each layer gasses off properly.

My Tele custom I did recently started to crack even without cold treatment. When I did throw it in the fridge it was easily done in a few hours.

I get my nitro from versatile products in Frankton Hamilton. Good family business.
