Covid Telemaster- JazzCaster project 2020
I’m working on an ash body tele Deluxe project .
I’ve sanded it and steel wool’d it into slinky smooth.
I’m wanting to use a contrasting grain filler for the semi transparent finish.
Can anyone recommend a brand or colour they’ve used with success.

Re: Ash body grain filler advice
You can go clear, brown, white whatever, and just add toner (or, as I’ve done once, furniture “dust”....super dark powders used in tints.
You’ll run a sealer coat first, right!!!
Kewl project!!

Yes, and no. Yes, they tint the grain filler, but can be liquid or powder. I'm not sure what you've got "at hand" to tint the filler. What sort of filler are you using? If it's a Bunnings type thingy, just buy the dark pre mixed. Waterbased ideally then you can smash it with whaetever you're top coating it with.Kev77 wrote:Cheers man, like a tint they put in paints,?
Which is what BTW? Nitro?

Haven’t got that far, most likely.
Cheers I’ll look into a good water based filler

Love the contrasting grain look. I've just refinished an LP studio. I was looking to go down the route of grainfilling the mahogany back and was going to use Timbermate and a dark red Rit fabric dye (Transtint is ideal but pretty pricey here). In the end though I decided to stick with open grain. With the top maple, my intention was to go through brown (sand) then red(sand again) and amber to finish to get a nice very subtle burst happening throughout the grain. But alas, given covid restrictions, getting supplies was impossible so I decided to go with a truoil finish instead. Glad I did as I'm loving the contrast of the natural finish of the maple against the deepness of the mahogany.
When I was doing my compulsory YT research, I leaned quite heavily on BigD guitars and Brad Angroves channels and Crimson guitars have some pretty good stuff too, but you probably already know that!

Re: Ash body grain filler advice
I've used timbermate stuff from Bunnings as well which seems to work fine. With Ash you might need to do a couple of fillings to really get the grain filled. And as Grant said make sure you use a sealer coat unless you're going for a cherry red finish where the dark filler is used to "stain" the timber a little.

Re: Ash body grain filler advice
As an update, I’ve gone for grain filler and thin layers of white shellac. The shellac is super thin and I’ve only done about six or so layers. I buff etc between coats. I’m liking the effect so far.
As I add more
Layers it will harden and bond with the ash, and hopefully remain somewhat transparent

Looking really good. What grain filler did you go for? I'm doing an Ash strat, I didn't really see anything at Mitre 10 that looked like it was suitable.
Loving it so far

got this stuff at Bunnings, I got the white one and tinted it.
It’s pretty tough out of the it, needs some water to turn it into an icing consistency

Re: Ash body grain filler advice
I use Timbermate too. I used to use a mortar and pestle to get it really smooth. I learned a lot from this build:
I'm at the 'stripping off the old finish' stage. Nice two-piece MJT alder body.
Just to clarify because this isn't something I knew to do. So, a sealer coat is an initial coat of paint (nitro aerosol in the case of my present Strat refin) applied before you do the first grain fill?GrantB wrote: You’ll run a sealer coat first, right!!!
