BOAN equals TOAN alert!
The new frets required the nut to be raised by a fraction. Could 'of' shimmed it but decided to make a new bone nut from some leftover Pack and Save cow bone which was chewed over by the our late dog many years ago
Got two blanks out of this piece
(and yes, the bone was properly degreased)
One bone nut for this guitar and one blank for the next guitar:
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

Gone away from that, too stinky. I flatten one side on Sandpaper by hand. Then glue it to a straight piece of timber and feed it through the table saw. Very delicate work and safety glasses , dust mask and earmuffs are prerequisites

Ta, I use white spirit or white gas whatever they call it in NZ.
Drown the bone in a jar with the WS for a few weeks.
Best to cook the bone beforehand to get all the marrow and most of the grease out of it. You can use the brew for a soup base too
