Another Philco Stereo Radio Project?

Post by Jay »

Last Friday I met up with a mate and showed him the ex Philco Radio guitar amp I just finished. He said he also had a Philco Radio and I could have it. Turns out to be the exact same model.

I would like to convert it into something single ended that pumps out about 8 watts. I have an old OPT that is rated at 10W so that could be used nicely.

What power valves you recommend I should check out?

I bought this State to do a year or so ago, but it’s
In great condition and works so well. First time firing it up Pink Floyd played. It’s about the same size as a Marshall head anyway.

That is a beautiful cabinet hopefully without borer. Both my Philco radios came as chassis only. Don't know what happened up the cabinets.

It would almost be a shame to convert it

Yeah, bought at auction unseen - when I picked it up I knew that it wasn't going to be converted

No suggestions?

Which valve you rate as nicer sounding? Why?

6V6 or 6L6?

Your choice would depend on your available OTs, wouldn’t it? The original looks like it’s wound for EL84s. What was your replacement OT designed for? The impedance ratios will dictate what you can or can’t use.

6V6 or 6L6?
6v6 for musicality, compression and harmonics
6L6 for clean, attack and volume

You'd love my Princeton with the Ragin Cajun speaker. It thinks it's a little Twin!

Beyond my literacy to know but I suspect Mr Warrener is more in the business of 'correcting' circuits than copying them.

I now have 4 amps with 6v6 and nothing with 6l6. So I’m confident where my allegiance is
