Is this going to work?

Post by Slowy »

I have an AC4 combo.
It's loaded with a Greenback that I'd like to use with other amps but I don't want to dismantle the combo. I just want to add the ability to plug in another amp and go.

If I install a jack socket wired to the speaker (while retaining the connection to the AC4 amp) I'm thinking I could either power the amp and use it as intended or unpower it and use it as a speaker cab.

Is there any flaw in my reasoning?

Yes. But an easier option might be to get a female to female 1/4 speaker cable adapter ?

I think the safest option is to wire a jack in parallel with the speaker like you suggest, that way if you forget to plug it back in to the amp you don't blow the tranny.

My friend had McPherson wire up his AC4 to do exactly this. I can't remember the exact wiring but he might have used a stereo jack so the AC4 is disconnected from the circuit when you plug an external amp in?

I'll see if he remembers!

Wouldn't that mean the AC4 output transformer is always part of the circuit? So the winds would muck up your impedence?

I have no idea and this is exactly why I'm asking. :D

I should add that the AC4 is a closed box. Simply unplugging the speaker requires the removal of 15 (!!!!) screws so it's not an option.

Can't picture how that would work.

A good point, you could use a switched jack to break the connection to one side of the tranny perhaps?

The new jack will need to break the connection to the amp when you insert the cable plug and restore the connection once unplugged.

Use one of these

Edit - I would remove the power cable from the amp when using it as an extension cabinet.

Leaving the plug into the new socket and powering up the amp is not a good idea

Its harder to imagine implementing without additional hardware.

Could you configure it so the speaker disconnects and there's a dummy 16ohm load connected to the AC4 when you plug an external amp in? Maybe that's over engineering it.
