Have you tried swapping out the pre-amp tubes one at a time with new one ?, you may have bad/low gain tube in there.

Agree with the pedal comments.
It doesnt look to be built in a way that would allow high gain imo, the component layout and wiring would have to be substantially revised to avoid whistling/oscillations.

The sound clip must include something extra......id describe my amp as rounder almost plexi-ish where the speakers develop almost a papery shrill to them ---very mid focused....hard to describe really but its awesome

You could easily build a LPB1 circuit into the front end. That's a totally colourless gain stage. If you'd like a very simple pcb for one that fits on the back of a pot lemme know. I think it's 7 components on there with 4 hookups (in, out, power, ground), takes about 5 minutes to build.
