15mm ply for 2x12 cab build?
Too thin? Just right? I ask because I have access to some 15mm of good quality and wondered if that material, qlonf with 1x1 battened corners with an internal bracing structure to which the baffles would be attached, would be strong/stiff enough to not be shit.
And of course silicone sealant on all joins to make it airtight.
So yeah, 15mm good or ungood?

From a structural integrity perspective or sonic perspective?NippleWrestler wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 4:28 pm Too thin? Just right? Good.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

I made 3x 1x15" cabs from 15mm, sturdy enough for the xxl rage cross!!!

Re: 15mm ply for 2x12 cab build?
I don't think an extra 3mm of ply makes any difference. For a closed back cab, its all about its construction. Are you dampening internally too? Its worth testing, I've used it a couple of times - think it came from livesound, but I'm sure something like Batts would have the same effect.
For battened corners I'll generally go the whole hog and dowel as well as internal screws and lots of glue.

So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

Not dampening with fabric or pink batts or anything, it'll be bare material.Bg wrote: ↑Fri Jul 29, 2022 5:56 pm I don't think an extra 3mm of ply makes any difference. And battened corners like this:
With an internal frame to strengthen everything. That one was solid macrocarpa, doweled, glued, and screwed, then battened, then caulked around all the joins. It was a good ol' cab.

I'm not saying you should, its just worth experimenting with. I noticed no difference but some do.
Yep glued, screwed, doweled, battened. Thats going nowhere.

What about 12.5mm for a single 10" ? just piggybacking on this and seeking opinions.
I have oinly built baby cabs (4x1" / 6" / 8") but picked up a few 10's planning to use the 12.5 I have but could justify a new sheet.

Don't see why not. It might be a bit light for a full size 4x12 but excellent for a small cab.Snarblinge wrote: ↑Sun Jul 31, 2022 2:14 pm What about 12.5mm for a single 10" ? just piggybacking on this and seeking opinions.

Re: 15mm ply for 2x12 cab build?
I built a 2x12 out of 12.5 once and it sounded very alive!
It was paired with a Vox head so it suited that sound just fine, it didn’t chug the same as a heavier/dead cab does though.

Classic Marshall cabs were 5/8" (~15.9mm) ply and they sound pretty good!
