Single vs Multiple Power Transformers

Post by jeremyb »

Hey, was wondering if there was any difference between using a single tranny with multiple taps for the heaters etc.. or using multiple transformers? (assuming appropriate values were available...)

It's all about real estate and weight plus another electromagnet field to consider. Why would one?
When faced with quality, I recognise it every time.

For low wattage amps it’s economical to stack a couple simple 240v:6v toroidals and run them back to back (240|6:6|240) to get a couple voltages for heaters and HT for <$100 total. For anything that needs 3 or more taps (valve recto or fixed bias) or is higher wattage, it’s probably cheaper to just get a suitable multi-tapped hammond model through mouser or element14.
