Combo to head conversion advice

Post by Sheriffdohboy »

Kia ora
New member here. Looking for advice from anyone about converting my combo -DJW 6V6 plexi style amp into a head shell unit.
Why???? Like the look of head with a cab and wanting to experiment with other cabs in the future.
Also getting a bit of tube rattle when cranked....not a biggie but conversion may help easy some of the rattle.

Could just whop off the top 1/3rd of the current cabinet and reattach the bottom plate??? dunno
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Nga mihi Adam

+1 for bg if you want it to look nice. Its good to be able to go back to a combo too if the need arises (which it might) so getting a seperate headshell would be my vote.
Ive just whacked the lower bits off two combo's to turn into heads so yeah that totally works too! ugly old peaveys so not much point being too precious there

Yep, Private Message Bg. There's the solution right there.

And welcome; that will be a fine amp you have there.
Beyond a critical point within a finite space, freedom diminishes as numbers increase. This is as true of humans as it is of gas molecules in a sealed flask. The human question is not how many can possibly survive within the system, but what kind of existence is possible for those who so survive.

If you don't care about it ever being a combo again, yep whop off the bottom 2/3rds, making sure they're square. You'll need to retolex though, if you just do the bottom bit, you'll need to match the tolex pattern type (if you care), if you're not bothered about appearance then just do it :D Glue and screw.

I can make you a head cab but, a full head cab build isn't cheap. I can make it into a head, and recover completely, that would be cheaper.
So, is that low alcohol or no alcohol at all? mmmm, no alcohol, do you want to try it? Noooooooooo.

I'd say take it to BG. New head cabinet for that amp will be totally worth it.
