Solder tips tips

Post by Snarblinge »

Hi All,

I build pedals, rather a number over the years, but I'm embarking on my first amp build. I intend on using turrets, just drawing up layout, as I find time.

However my iron tips are all tiny, I like to work higher temp smaller tip generally.

I have a pair of weller stations, so rather a range to pick from. Which size tips are recommended for turret builds?

thanks all.

I believe a good guide is to start with a tip that is about as wide as the hole you are soldering.

From there, try larger and smaller to see what works better.

You may also be able to use lower temperatures as the larger tips hold heat better.

I usually use a 1.6mm~2.4mm Chisel tip.

Tube amp and guitar tones straight from 1958… amazing how believable the sounds were back then, even without the modellers...

Sizzlingbadger just bet me to it - I also use a chisel tip with my Hakko - I find the conical ones that go to a small rounded point do not provide enough surface area to transfer the heat. The chisel tip works well for me for turrets, eyelets, valve pins and even small components on a printed circuit board.
