NAD! well it’s half finished!
This is one of my new amps, Paul WD built 18watt EL84 with an EF86. It sounds like a Marshall 18watt with a bit of Vox chime.
I decided to build it into a combo as I no longer own a combo and it’s kind of handy having something to grab and go.
I’ve built the cabinet big enough to fit a 12” speaker but I’ve always liked the Greenback G10 so I’ve got one of them on the way. (Can always build a baffle for a 12” speaker later)
Pine cabinet with ply baffle, should hopefully have it finished by gearfest in 2 weeks!

Re: NAD! well it’s half finished!
It’s close to finished now, the cabinet is sounding pretty good with the G10 Greenback.
I’ll post some clips once I get some time.
Having some noise
Issues with the EF86 so we are going to swap some tubes until we find a low noise stable one.

I suggest that you use metal oxide or film resistors around the EF86. Carbon comp can introduce hiss.

Paul WD if your listening maybe you could advise on what was used?Anvil Amps Alan wrote: ↑Thu Aug 13, 2020 10:49 amI suggest that you use metal oxide or film resistors around the EF86. Carbon comp can introduce hiss.
I just tried around 7 different EF86 tubes and it got rid of some of the hiss and microphonics by selecting a different one.
Interestingly both the Telefuncten ones were the worst! Thought they might have been the best. it still has some hiss at full gain/volume but most amps do?

Re: NAD! well it’s half finished!
Though I have a bunch of carbon comp resistors, Ive never been brave enough to use them. Nearly all will be metal in this one, with one or two carbon film.
Interesting that ef86's seem to be problematic/microphonic in guitar amps. I use them a lot in hi-fi without bother. They're pushed easier there though.
I'm glad you got the noise down. What handle did you decide on?

Getting close to finished, the 10” speaker sounds great and is really light too!
First run through here, gain and master are on full but guitar volume knob is backed off a bit at the start of the clip.

Not sure if you've noticed Reg but the amp is upside down and the speaker is on the wrong side, measure twice cut once!!
