Just modded my amp to Friedman specs.. Holy balls!

Post by griff »

Was hesitant to revoice my amp (JCA 22h) from what it had (Jubilee/Plexi) because it was sounding sooo good, but did it anyway.
Now I have her as Phil X voiced on channel 1 with and HBE on channel 2.
The Phil X channel has a 3 way toggle switch that drops out more and more gain at each click. Goes from heavy crunch to medium gain JCM sorta stuff then to plexi/clean.. extremely usable in every setting.
Then there's the voltage divider switch. This affects both channels. One way decreases headroom slightly and adds compression, with a slight drop in volume, very nice.
I see what all the fuss is about with these amps, absolutely fantastic! Such a huge range of tones to be had. The harmonics just jump out of this thing, and a nice tight bottom, but not too tight. Very musical in every way.. Oozing with tone.. hot molten tubey love..

50% bias with high headroom Russian EL84's. I found hotter bias settings don't work well with Marshall voiced amps, things get mushy.
Now I need to get good so I'm qualified to play this thing..

Anyway, who else plays Friedman's or other Jose style circuits? Best you've played?

Hopefully I can get along to a gear fest for y'all to have a jam!

Jose Mod, my favourite for rodded Marshall tones.

Best amp I’ve played thru is a Mojave Peacemaker, Jose Mod by Ryan.
In stock form it’s Plexi all the way, AC/DC to early Van Halen.
Jose engaged covers Priest, Maiden to Sunset Strip tones ala Ratt/Crue.

Friedman’s APC/Naked mod is a little different from the other offerings.
Simple clean.
Dirt channel a combo of Naylor Super drive preamp with 100w Marshall power section.
A smoother type of gain but with a darker voicing & tight low end.

I have a good relationship with Bryce the owner of this page.
If you get an amp and want it modded, I'd be happy to do it for you.

Yeah. It's a shame the Rockshop couldn't keep supplying them too. They pop up every now and then. There's actually a 50 watt combo on TM at the moment at a good price.

But ya know, for the price of these amps, it would still be a fraction of the cost to import one new and do a mod. You would get something that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference in a blind test. SLO 100 for $1000.. yes please!

Yep, damn shame he’s off the radar now :(
His work was stellar.
Don’t know of anyone that’s stepped up to the plate.

You sound like you’re on the right track tho

Edit: just read Delayman’s just saying post.
You could try hitting up Waylon McPherson.

You added a switch that allows you to remove gain? I don't understand this concept...
The older I get, the more disappointed in myself I become.
